A cleaning technic for mercury in the clinical laboratory.

چکیده
COMMONLY USED TECHNICS for cleaning mercury in the laboratory are those whereby mercury is washed several times with a variety of solutions (water, sucrose solution, detergents, or diluted nitric acid), followed by filtration through a cheesecloth or pin-holed filter paper. These methods are not only inadequate, but also present a health hazard. The distillation of mercury is not practical in the clinical laboratory. To obviate these problems, a simple and safe method was devised and is presented here. The pooled used mercury is washed with water by stirring with a plastic rod in a plastic beaker. The mercury is rinsed in running tap water and most of the last rinse water is poured off, leaving a sufficient amount to cover the mercury in the container. The whole container is transfered into a freezer (temperature usually -20#{176}) and left overnight. On the following day the frozen upper aqueous layer is lifted off and the cold mercury is poured into a clean container through a cheesecloth filter. Mercury freezes at -38.87#{176}(1). The container is covered with a tight lid and the mercury is warmed to room temperature before use. Reference

Background & objective: Mercury is a toxic and bio-accumulative pollutant that has adverse effects on environmental and human health. There have been a number of attempts to regulate mercury emissions tothe atmosphere. Silver nanoparticles are a number of materials that have highly potential to absorb mercury and formation of mercury amalgam. The aim of this study is removal of mercury va...
متن کاملKINETIC SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF MERCURY IN DIFFERENT MATERIALS BASED ON ITS INHIBITORY EFFECT ON THE BRILLIANT GREEN-SULFITE REACTION
A new kinetic method for the determination of Hg(II) based on its inhibitory effect on the Brilliant green-sulfite reaction at pH 6.5 is proposed. The reaction is followed spectrophotometrically at 615 nm by measuring the change in absorbance at the fixed time of 3.5 min after the initiation of the reaction. Both the influence of the reaction variables and the interference of many ions have...

متن کاملHigh Blood Mercury Levels in Iranian Infants: A Cause For Concern
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: There have been concerns over possible association between mercury and neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants. In this study we aimed to determine whether blood levels of mercury are above safe values in Iranian infants or not. Materials and Methods: A total of 85 infants (0, 2, 4 and 6 months old) were enrolled in this study. All of them received vaccin...
متن کاملMercury toxicity
Mercury is a metal found in elemental, organic, and inorganic forms in the nature. This substance is present in the composition of earth crust, soil, air, and even in some tissues of plants and sea animals. Each year nearly 3400 tons of mercury compounds are released in the environment, which 95% settle in the soil, 3% in the oceans, and 2% in the atmosphere. Different industrial products li...
